Letter: Writer misinformed on UK‘s health care

The Aug. 23 letter “US cannot afford socialized health care” from Hudnall J. Lewis regarding socialized medicine is not factual with respect to Britain. The country was broke after World War II and still had to pay the United States. Winston Churchill was viewed as expendable after leading us during the fight against Nazi Germany and the Labour Party promised the average bloke a future that the Conservatives lacked the imagination to contemplate.

To conflate the National Health Service with bankrupting an essentially bankrupt country and with the retreat from colonialism is misinformed. While the NHS is neither perfect nor, in all probability, sustainable in current form, the alternative is not the broken and unsustainable U.S. health-care system where millions are unable to afford any care at all and millions more are being financially cremated by insurance costs.

If the Republican politicians would get off their high horse and allow what is called (disparagingly by an army of ill-informed conservatives) Obamacare to actually slowly work for the betterment of the American people, progress could be made toward making it as effective as Americans deserve.

When I came to the states in the early 1960s, health care wasn‘t the issue it is now and, given the American can-do attitude, shouldn‘t be an issue at all. We can hope that Bill Gates and Warren Buffett will arrive at some answers. Meanwhile, I suggest Lewis check out aimseducation.edu.
